West Ham United needed to beat Newcastle United to have any realistic chance of staying in the Premier League. Unfortunately, they slumped to a 3-1 defeat, meaning Tottenham Hotspur could now relegate the Hammers when they play Chelsea on Tuesday night.

Relegation means that many of West Ham's top players will leave. However, it could also be a big opportunity for some of the Hammers' young players to develop in the Championship. It remains to be seen if Nuno Espirito Santo will stay.

Many fans will want former West Ham player Scott Parker to guide the club back to the Premier League. Parker recently left Burnley and has guided three different clubs to promotion from the Championship.

Newcastle–West Ham Premier League player ratings

Below, we're rating the West Ham players on a scale of 1 to 10.

Goalkeeper and defenders

Mads Hermanson (GK): 4

Made a mistake playing out from the back, which led to Newcastle's opener. Was then nutmegged for their second. Did manage to assist Taty Castellanos with a long ball forward.

Jean-Clair Todibo (CB): 3

Sloppy in possession, and was replaced by Castellanos after just 26 minutes. Castellanos' goal was one of the only positives the Hammers can take from this game.

Axel Disasi (CB): 4

Caught out of position too often.

Dinos Mavropanos (CB): 5

Was not able to organize his back line, which did not look on the same wavelength.

Midfielders

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (RM): 4

Did not look brave enough to get stuck in and make a challenge.

Tomas Soucek (CM): 4

Overrun by Newcastle's midfield.

Mateus Fernandes (CM): 5

Not much he can do with this West Ham team around him. Will almost certainly leave for a top Premier League or European club this summer.

El Hadj Malik Diouf (LM): 4

Often pushed up too far, leaving West Ham's back three exposed. He put a good cross in late on from which Castellanos nearly scored, but hit the post.

Forwards

Jarrod Bowen (CAM): 5

Saw a shot late on saved by Nick Pope.

Crysencio Summerville (CAM): 4

Was once thought to be the man to guide West Ham to safety, Crysencio Summerville has suffered a massive dip in form since his injury.

Callum Wilson (CF): 4

Deserved a chance after his form from the bench recently, but Castellanos proved he is West Ham's best striker.

Substitutes
