After getting injured at the World Cup, Tomas Soucek is yet to play for West Ham United this season. However, he is back in training and recently featured in a behind-closed-doors friendly win over Wycombe Wanderers. He is set to be available against Queens Park Rangers this Friday, and there is more good news from the Soucek camp.

Roshane Thomas of The Athletic has reported that "West Ham United are in talks with Tomas Soucek over a contract extension. The midfielder wants to retire at West Ham and the deal should be finalised later this month. Negotiations are in the final phase."

Soucek is yet to experience Championship football with West Ham. He arrived at the Hammers initially on loan in 2020 from Slavia Prague before the move became permanent. Vlad Coufal also followed him from the Czech side.

Coufal was also a star for West Ham before he left for Hoffenheim. However, he has remained a big West Ham fan. After the recent England victory over Czechia in the Nations League, the right-back made a crossed Hammers sign with his arms to the supporters at Wembley Stadium.

Tomas Soucek has been a loyal servent to West Ham

Soucek missed out on international duty due to the ankle injury he picked up against Mexico in the group stage of the World Cup. This may have prevented him from making a transfer away from West Ham. David Moyes wanted him at Everton, and he was also linked with the Turkish side Galatasaray.

Much is made of West Ham keeping hold of Jarrod Bowen over the summer. However, Soucek and the likes of Dinos Mavropanos staying are just as important. Soucek, at 6 ft 4 in, will have the physicality to be a real force in the Championship.

West Ham have also been light on midfield options after letting Mateus Fernandes and James Ward-Prowse depart the club. Soucek should be able to drop into defensive midfield well alongside Arne Engels, with Divine Mukasa playing in a more attacking role.

As it stands, Soucek has played 284 times for West Ham, scoring 47 goals with 13 assists. He helped West Ham win the Europa Conference League and will now be looking to help them out of the Championship. He has 93 caps for Czechia and will be targeting making that a century. He is only 31, so he should have the legs to be in consideration for the European Championships in 2028.
