There have only ever been 20 West Ham United managers if you exclude caretaker and interim appointments. It is an exclusive club to be a part of, and it shows that the Hammers hierarchy gives its bosses time.
Recently, this has not been the case, as there have been three different managers since David Moyes' second stint ended in 2024. However, West Ham did still stick with Nuno Espírito Santo despite relegation from the Premier League.
There have been some notable managers in charge of West Ham. However, you have to delve into the history books to find the truly great ones.
Best West Ham managers
5. Ted Fenton
Managers such as Sam Allardyce and Alan Pardew got West Ham promoted to the Premier League via the playoffs. However, Ted Fenton got West Ham back into the top flight by winning the Second Division. When Fenton did this in the 1957/58 season, it ended a barren spell of 26 years without Division One football. Fenton is also credited with his work in the club's academy, which would go on to produce stars for West Ham and England.
4. Harry Redknapp
Redknapp is an iconic West Ham manager for the star players he signed and brought into the first team. He took a chance on signing Paolo Di Canio, who became a hero in East London. Also, Redknapp helped bring through the likes of Frank Lampard, Rio Ferdinand and Joe Cole. Under Redknapp, West Ham also won the Intertoto Cup.
3. David Moyes
Moyes has to be on this list as he guided West Ham to win the Europa Conference League. This ended a 23-year wait for major silverware at the club. Across his two stints at West Ham, Moyes also rescued the Hammers in relegation battles.
Unfortunately, many fans were not happy with Moyes' style of play. However, he was not backed by the board to sign players to carry out a more expansive style. Many attribute the club's decision not to renew his contract to the predicament of being in the Championship now.
2. John Lyall
Lyall came through West Ham's academy as a player and had a brief spell in the first team. However, his career was cut short by injury, which led him into coaching. He worked his way up from coaching the youth teams to replacing Ron Greenwood as first-team manager.
The succession plan worked with Lyall going on to win two FA Cups and the Second Division with the Hammers. He also took the Hammers to the League Cup and European Cup Winners' Cup finals. Lyall helped nurture some top players, including Billy Bonds, Trevor Brooking and Alan Devonshire.
1. Ron Greenwood
Greenwood had a very good team at his disposal, as it had the likes of Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters. All three played crucial roles in England winning the World Cup in 1966. Greenwood won the FA Cup, European Cup Winners' Cup and the Charity Shield with West Ham.
The manager took charge of West Ham on 658 occasions from 1961 to 1974. His record with the Hammers led to him eventually becoming the England manager.
