West Ham want to sign a new quality centre back this summer. The preseason friendlies against Premier League opponents Wolves and Crystal Palace have highlighted the need for a new central defender to partner Max Kilman.

Also, Kurt Zouma has left West Ham after three years at the club. Thus, West Ham are linked with a lot of defenders including World Cup winner Mats Hummels as well. However, Hummels is 35 and may consider retirement as well this summer.

Should West Ham sign experienced Liverpool centre back

Now, recent reports from GIVEMESPORT suggest that the Hammers are interested in experienced Liverpool centre back Joe Gomez. The 27-year-old is a versatile defender who can play as a centre back as well as a full back. Gomez has made 224 appearances for Liverpool winning the UEFA Champions League and the Premier League as well.

Mostly used as a third choice centre back by former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, Gomez has been a reliable presence for Liverpool in the defence. Hence, West Ham are considering Gomez as the new centre back in this transfer window.

However, Gomez has still three years remaining on his Liverpool contract, and West Ham will need to spend around £45 million to sign him. West Ham have already signed six new players this summer and are negotiating with Manchester United to sign Aaron Wan-Bissaka as the new right back.

Thus, the Hammers will need to sell a few players in order to sign Gomez. Currently, Julen Lopetegui's side have three centre back options Max Kilman, Konstantinos Mavropanos and Nayef Aguerd. Kilman will be the starting centre back for West Ham and Mavropanos has been good in the preseason.

Hence, West Ham should try to sign a young centre back for around £15 million instead. With this, West Ham can also sign Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Manchester United. Thus, West Ham should consider other centre back options to strengthen the defence ahead of the upcoming Premier League season.
