Recently, West Ham have entered the race to sign Germany's 2014 FIFA World Cup winning defender Mats Hummels on a free transfer. Despite being 35, the former Borussia Dortmund centre back is still a world class defender and his heroics in the Champions League last season helped Dortmund reach the final as well.
Considering West Ham's need for a rock solid centre back, Hummels is a great option who can lead the defence and his experience and winning mentality makes him an invaluable asset for Julen Lopetegui's side who are aiming for a top six finish in the upcoming Premier League season. Further, Kurt Zouma is leaving West Ham this summer which opens up a centre back spot in the West Ham squad as well.
Bundesliga legend may consider retirement as well this summer
However, a recent report from Florian Plettenberg has revealed that Hummels may consider retirement as well this summer. Florian Plettenberg said,
"WHUFC considering to bring in one more experienced central defender this window. Hummels is on their list.Florian Plettenberg
A late attempt from West Ham is not excluded. Instead, Bologna have withdrawn their offer for Hummels.
But It is also possible that Hummels will end his career. There are corresponding thoughts, but no final decision yet."
According to the report, Bologna have withdrawn their offer to bring Hummels on a free transfer to replace Riccardo Calafiori, who joined Arsenal. West Ham are monitoring Hummels and currently, they are looking to present an offer to sign the experienced central defender.
However, Mats Hummels can consider retirement as well. Hummels has spent his entire career playing in the Bundesliga for Bayern Munich as well as Borussia Dortmund. Thus, the Bundesliga legend may not prefer a move outside Bundesliga and can announce his retirement this summer.
Still, it is a speculation that Hummels will consider retirement. If this happens, West Ham will need to look at other centre back options to bolster their defensive ranks.
