Hammers supporters will be hoping to see the back of this striker

West Ham United have struggled to find a top-class center-forward for some time.

West Ham United supporters had thought they had seen the back of Niclas Fullkrug when he went on loan to AC Milan. However, the Rosseneri will not likely sign him permanently.

The signing of Fullkrug from Borussia Dortmund back in 2024 was seen as a coup. However, injuries and poor form led to the German making just 29 appearances for the Hammers, scoring three times and making two assists.

Despite his struggles at the London Stadium, Fullkrug still managed to earn a loan move to Milan in January. He has not been able to make an impact for the Serie A side, scoring just once in 16 games.

Fullkrug had been prolific in Germany at clubs including Werder Bremen, Greuther Fürth, Nürnberg, Hannover, and Dortmund. However, he has been unable to replicate this form in England or Italy.

Niclas Fullkrug's West Ham nightmare could soon be over

A return to the Bundesliga could be what Fullkrug needs. However, at 33 and given his injury record, he is definitely at the back end of his career.

Florian Plettenberg of Sky Germany posted on X: "VfL Wolfsburg are once again discussing a potential summer move for Niclas Füllkrug. West Ham are convinced that AC Milan will not activate the €5 million purchase option, meaning he would return to London. His contract with WHUFC would still be valid even in the event of relegation, although his salary would be reduced by 50 %."

Just like West Ham, Wolfsburg have relegation worries. They are currently 17th in the Bundesliga, which is an automatic relegation place. This is despite them having former Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United player Christian Eriksen on their roster.

The Hammers have moved on from Fullkrug, signing Taty Castellanos and Pablo in January. However, they will not likely stick around if West Ham is relegated from the Premier League. Callum Wilson is set to stay regardless of which division the Hammers are in.

Fullkrug is still contracted to West Ham until 2028. However, given how his time in East London has gone so far, it would be best for all parties if he moved on.
