It may not have worked out for him at Upton Park, but he could make his mark as a manager.

Former West Ham United midfielder Kieron Dyer is now a coach. He is now set for his first role in management at Southend United.

TransferCenter9, who have become a credible source on non-league news posted on X: "Southend United are set to appoint former England midfielder Kieron Dyer as their new head coach."

Dyer joined West Ham from Newcastle United in 2007, but injuries, including a broken leg, marred his time at Upton Park. He made just 35 appearances for the Hammers and was sent on loan to his former club Ipswich Town in 2011.

The midfielder left West Ham in the same year for Queens Park Rangers and then had a spell with Middlesbrough. He made fewer than 10 appearances for both of those clubs.

Dyer worked as an academy coach at Ipswich after retiring and was an assistant to John McGreal for their Under-23s. He was then promoted to the first team and was Paul Cook's assistant. Dyer has been working as an individual coach for Cook at Chesterfield.

Many West Ham fans are present at Southend games

Southend, which is in Essex and a club that many West Ham fans have as a second team, could be a good job for Dyer. They were an established EFL side but were relegated to the National League in 2021.

The Shrimps had many financial problems, which led to their demise in non-league soccer. However, the current COSU consortium that owns the club appears to be getting the club back on track. They came close to returning to League One in the 2024/25 season, but lost to Oldham Athletic in the playoff final.

In the campaign just gone, Southend lost to Scunthorpe in the playoffs after finishing sixth in the National League. However, they did win the FA Trophy by defeating Wealdstone in the final at Wembley Stadium.

Despite this, Kevin Maher was sacked as their manager. Dyer could be the man to lead Southend back to the Football League.
