West Ham United fans have wanted David Sullivan gone for a long time. It has now been confirmed that he has resigned from his position as chairman.
Sullivan put out a statement on West Ham's official website saying, "I have recently become aware that factually incorrect and entirely false, decades-old allegations concerning my personal life are due to be broadcast and published... Therefore, after very careful consideration and with a heavy heart, I have decided to resign as Joint-Chair and Director of West Ham United FC with immediate effect."
Hammers fans have protested against Sullivan, his former vice-chair, Karen Brady, and former co-chair, the late David Gold. The supporters feel as if they were sold a dream and delivered a nightmare at the London Stadium. Brady resigned unexpectedly during the season; perhaps she knew what a mess the club and Sullivan were heading for.
Under Sullivan, Gold, and Brady, West Ham moved from their home of Upton Park to the soulless ground that was used for the London 2012 Olympics. Capacity has been boosted as 62,500 can fit in the London Stadium, when Upton Park held just 35,016. However, the atmosphere has gotten worse due to fans being so far from the pitch.
The David Sullivan era had turned very toxic
The move was supposed to take West Ham to the next level. The club did win the Europa Conference League in 2023. However, they have been on a downward spiral ever since. The succession plan for David Moyes has been dreadful. Julen Lopetegui came in, then Graham Potter, and now Nuno Espirito Santo.
Nuno will attempt to guide West Ham back to the Premier League following their recent relegation. Fans will be hoping that the post-Sullivan era will be less toxic. West Ham also revealed in a statement that "Interim Chief Executive Officer Karim Virani, reporting into the current Board of Directors, will continue to be responsible for leading the Club’s day-to-day operations. The Club will provide an update on the future structure of the Board of Directors in due course."
It is not the end of Sullivan completely at West Ham. He is still a major shareholder along with Daniel Křetínský and Vanessa Gold. It remains to be seen what the future will hold for Sullivan and West Ham. However, the change that Hammers fans have wanted is finally happening.
