Graham Potter was a highly rated coach when he was at Brighton & Hove Albion. He was even tipped to be a future England manager. However, his short stint in charge of Chelsea damaged his reputation.

His time at West Ham United was not much better. It appeared to be the perfect time for Potter to join the Hammers after David Moyes had left the club. However, the Hammers appointed Julen Lopetegui, who proved to be a disaster.

Potter replaced Lopetegui, but results did not improve, and West Ham finished the 2024/25 campaign in 14th place. With a full pre-season under his belt, this season was Potter's chance to prove himself as a manager once again. However, he was sacked in September after a poor start to the campaign.

Nuno Espirito Santo replaced Potter, and results have only recently started to get better. Whilst the Hammers remain in the bottom three, their is optimism that they can still escape relegation to the Championship.

Graham Potter's career has always been unorthodox

After his playing career, Potter studied for a Msc at Leeds Metropolitan University. Whilst there, he managed their affiliated team, Leeds Carnegie. He then went to Östersund in Sweden and took them from the third tier into the top flight and into the Europa League.

Swansea City of the Championship was his next destination, and the Welsh side was to be a stepping stone to the Premier League with Brighton. Now, after failures at Chelsea and West Ham, Potter is Sweden's head coach.

Despite having players such as Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres, Sweden was having a bad World Cup qualifying campaign, which led to Potter taking over the reins. He has managed just two games for the national team, drawing 1-1 with Slovenia before losing 4-1 to Switzerland.

Sweden still managed to make it to the playoffs for a chance at the World Cup next summer. They face Ukraine in their playoff semi-final on March 26. If Sweden fails to qualify for the World Cup, Potter could be available to return to club soccer. Even if they do make it to the tournament in North America next summer, he might be available after.

Potter took his time after Chelsea when choosing the West Ham job, but a great opportunity may soon present itself to him. Football Insider has reported that "Potter is set to be considered as a potential option for Celtic’s next permanent appointment."

Celtic currently has Martin O'Neill in charge until the end of the season. This is O'Neill's second stint as the Scottish giants' boss this season. He took over from Brendan Rodgers on an interim basis, where he impressed. Wilfried Nancy then took over, but his tenure was a disaster, so O'Neill took over again.

Rodgers used success at Celtic as a stepping stone back to the Premier League with Leicester City. It is usually a two-horse race in Scotland for the league title between Celtic and Rangers. Although Hearts are currently top of the division. This would make the opportunity to manage the Hoops a great opportunity for Potter to re-establish himself as a manager.
