West Ham United needed extra time to get past Burton Albion in the FA Cup. Whilst staying in the Premier League is the Hammers' priority, it would have been psychologically damaging for Nuno Espirito Santo's side to have suffered a defeat to a League One side.
Burton Albion–West Ham FA Cup player ratings
Below, we're rating the West Ham players on a scale of 1 to 10.
Goalkeeper and defenders
Alphonse Areola (GK): 7
Alphonse Areola is now West Ham's cup goalkeeper after losing his starting spot in Premier League games to Mads Hermansen. Keeping a clean sheet will help the Frenchman to rediscover his confidence. The Frenchman made an excellent save late on.
Dinos Mavropanos (CB): 7
Dinos Mavropanos' physicality kept the Burton attack at bay. He has become a key player for West Ham this season and was rewarded with the captain's armband for this fixture. He was also a threat from set-pieces.
Max Kilman (CB): 6
Having come from the lower divisions of English soccer, Max Kilman's experience was useful in this game. He is short of confidence, so he can take heart from his performance.
Ezra Mayers (CB): 6
Ezra Mayers filled in well alongside Mavropanos and Kilman. However, he could have done better in one-on-one situations.
Midfielders
Kyle Walker-Peters (RM): 6
The natural right-back played in a more advanced role and often bombed forward.
Soungoutou Magassa (CM): 7
The midfielder threaded some excellent passes forward.
Mohamadou Kanté (CM) 6
The young Frenchman often advanced and linked up well with his attackers. However, he did fire a shot well off target.
Oliver Scarles (LM): 5
West Ham needed more from Scarles. His replacement, Crysensio Summerville, saved the Hammers from a potential embarrassing upset with his fantastic solo goal. Summerville came close to doubling the Hammers' advantage after some excellent pressing.
Forwards
Adama Traore (RW): 6
Adama Traore was a handful for Burton's defence to deal with. He was able to draw fouls and put the ball into dangerous areas.
Callum Wilson (CF): 6
Callum Wilson was not afraid to pull the trigger. However, he was not clinical enough. Axel Disasi came on for Wilson, and the defender made a crucial acrobatic clearance.
Keiber Lamadrid (LW): 5
The new-signing was not very effective, and he was replaced by Freddie Potts, who got sent off.
