West Ham United were lucky to keep hold of Dinos Mavropanos after relegation from the Premier League. Borussia Dortmund and Bayer Leverkusen, as well as his former club Arsenal, were reportedly interested.
Keeping hold of Mavropanos has been as important as Jarrod Bowen staying. The centre-back has scored four goals in eight Championship games so far this season. This included the equaliser against bitter rivals Millwall.
Hammers fans have been concerned after recent reports about Mavropanos' future. Florian Plettenberg of Sky Germany posted on X: "Mavropanos, one to watch for the next two transfer windows. The 28 y/o Greek top defender is attracting significant interest and has joined ROOF as his new agency. Contract at West Ham until 2028. A key player for the club, but no contract extension currently planned."
Mavropanos has also been in form for his country, Greece, where he impressed in a 1-0 defeat to Germany in the recent Nations League fixtures. Clubs across Europe are interested in signing him.
Ekrem Konur has reported that "Beşiktaş and Olympiakos are locked in a race to sign West Ham United's 28-year-old central defender Konstantinos Mavropanos! → Valued at €18m, West Ham are holding out for a price tag around £25m–£30m for the Greek international."
Beşiktaş and Olympiakos are both in the Europa League. However, the Greek Super League and the Turkish Süper Lig are not considered the best divisions in Europe. Beşiktaş is one of Turkey's biggest clubs, and they are able to attract big names. In their squad is Leandro Trossard, who won the Premier League with Arsenal last season.
West Ham fans will not want Mavropanos to go
Olympiakos is from Mavropanos' homeland. They also have other star players, including former Premier League players Stefan Ortega, Leon Bailey, and Jota Silva. The Greek side is also owned by Evangelos Marinakis, who also owns Nottingham Forest. Therefore, a move to Forest could be straightforward for Mavropanos if he goes to Olympiakos.
Mavropanos is only 28, so should in his prime be playing at the highest level he can. This could be back in the Premier League with West Ham if they are promoted this season.
After being linked with Bundesliga sides and Arsenal over the summer, Besiktas and Olympiakos are somewhat underwhelming suitors for Mavropanos. This is with all due respect to the giants of Turkish and Greek football.
West Ham fans will hope that Mavropanos stays and helps the club gain promotion from the Championship. Losing Mavropanos would leave them very light on defensive options. The player has formed a solid partnership with Max Kilman this season.
Morata is also in West Ham's ranks, but has been used as a left-back rather than a centre-back this campaign. Then Nuno Espírito Santo also has the young pair of Ezra Mayers and Airidas Golambeckis at his disposal.
West Ham also continues to be linked with Dylan Lawlor of Cardiff City. Hammers fans will want Mavropanos to stay, as he is one of the best centre-backs in the Championship. However, if the club does cash in on him, then signing a top replacement would be essential.
