Callum Wilson's contract at West Ham United expires in just three days. There has been no announcement by the club about whether he will be staying or going. A potential move to Ipswich Town has now been reported.
According to The East Anglian Daily Times, "Ipswich Town retain a strong interest in experienced striker Callum Wilson... Wilson has been offered a new deal at freshly-relegated West Ham, but could well turn that down in order to remain a Premier League player." The player was linked with the Tractor Boys back in January.
Wilson has just had a solid season for West Ham. In 32 Premier League games, he scored seven goals with one assist. This was with him making most of these appearances off the bench. West Ham started the campaign playing Niclas Fullkrug up front. Taty Castellanos was the club's main striker when he arrived in January from Lazio.
There are fine lines in soccer, and Wilson should have another goal to his tally. His equalizer against Arsenal toward the end of the season was controversially ruled out by VAR. This was despite multiple fouls occurring by Gunners players, as well as what was perceived to be an infringement on David Raya.
Callum Wilson moving on would be a loss to West Ham
This was one incident that led to West Ham's relegation. With the Hammers going down, a mass exodus is expected. Castellanos, who impressed, will likely be sold, with Everton interested. Pablo, who arrived at the Hammers at the same time as Castellanos, will probably move on too. Fullkrug spent the second half of the campaign on loan at AC Milan. The German has recently been linked with Fiorentina and Real Sociedad.
Wilson could have been a good player for West Ham in the Championship next season. He has experience in the division at AFC Bournemouth. In the 2014/15 season, Wilson scored 20 goals with 13 assists in 45 matches as the Cherries won the Championship. He also played in England's soccer second tier with Coventry City. The Sky Blues have also just been promoted to the Premier League and are Wilson's hometown club.
If Wilson joins Ipswich, he would be playing under former West Ham midfielder Gary O'Neil. The Tractor Boys recently captured O'Neil from Strasbourg to be Kieran McKenna's replacement. Ipswich needs to recruit strikers to give them any chance of staying in the Premier League.
Strikers Chuba Akpom and Ivan Azon were on loan at the club last season. Akpom has joined the club permanently. Wilson will also be competing with George Hirst for a starting role. He scored 11 Championship goals last season. However, he managed just three when Ipswich were last in the Premier League. That campaign was the 2024/25 campaign, where Liam Delap led the line for the Tractor Boys. His form led to a move to Chelsea. Ipswich will need a player like him to boost their chances of survival.
