Coming through the youth ranks at Charlton Athletic, Defoe joined West Ham in a £1.4 million transfer move in 1999.

The talented centre-forward was sent on-loan to Bournemouth, where he showcased his huge potential by scoring eighteen goals in the second division and was given a first-team role at West Ham next season. Over the next three seasons, Defoe scored a total of 40 goals for West Ham and joined Tottenham Hotspurs in a £6 million transfer move in 2004 due to the Hammers getting relegated at the end of the 2003/04 league campaign.

The England international stayed at Tottenham Hotspurs for around nine seasons and became their seventh all-time topscorer with 143 goals across all competitions. Defoe later played for Major League Soccer side Toronto and Scottish side Rangers as well, alongside returning to Sunderland where he announced his retirement in 2022.
