It was thought that Axel Disasi would only consider joining West Ham United permanently if they kept their Premier League status. Despite the club's relegation, the Hammers are still trying to sign the French defender.
According to SportsBoom, "West Ham are lining up a move to bring Chelsea defender Axel Disasi back to the club on a permanent deal."
Disasi impressed whilst on loan at West Ham during the second half of last season. He formed a formidable partnership with Dinos Mavropanos. However, it was not enough to keep West Ham in the Premier League.
Mavopanos could also be leaving West Ham, as he has been linked with Borussia Dortmund. Many of the club's other top players, including Jarrod Bowen, Crysencio Summerville, and Mateus Fernandes, are also in demand from top teams.
Would Axel Disasi want to play in the Championship?
Disasi would have thought that he proved himself as a Premier League player during his loan at West Ham. He was frozen out at Chelsea and rebuilt his reputation at the London Stadium. However, there has not been much speculation about other top-flight clubs being interested.
A rumor about Leeds United wanting Disasi has gone quiet. Whilst he has also been linked with Benfica. The defender is now 28, so he should be in his prime. The center-back should have ambitions of getting back into France's roster. This is despite his last appearance for his country coming back in 2023.
The Championship is still a very good division, but it will not be a level to get noticed for the French team. If he were to join Benfica, that is still not one of Europe's top five leagues. However, he will have the chance to compete in the Europa League at the Portuguese side.
As time goes on in this transfer window, Disasi will no doubt be linked with more clubs. However, if nothing comes to fruition, returning to West Ham could be his best bet. Disasi could win promotion from the Championship with the Hammers and then be back in the Premier League the following season.
The defender will have time this summer to weigh up his options, and was seen enjoying himself watching the tennis at the French Open. It would be a real coup for West Ham to re-sign Disasi. The other center-backs they have been linked with, such as Dylan Lawlor, are nowhere near as experienced as the Frenchman.
