Brentford survived a stern test from sixth-tier giant-killers Macclesfield to book their place in the Emirates FA Cup fifth round, winning 1-0 courtesy of a heartbreaking own goal courstesy of a Sam Heathcote deflection from a header. The victory means Brentford will face West Ham next at The London Stadium, tentatively scheduled for March 7th.
The Bees, who had been held at bay for long periods by John Rooney's resolute Silkmen, finally broke through in the 70th minute when Macclesfield's defender inadvertently nodded Keane Lewis-Potter's dangerous cross past his own goalkeeper, Max Dearnley. It was a cruel end to what had been an heroic rearguard action from the National League North outfit.
Rooney's Cinderella Run Ends
The Silkmen had captured the imagination of the football world after their stunning 2-1 victory over FA Cup holders Crystal Palace in the third round – widely regarded as the greatest upset in the competition's 155-year history. Facing another top-flight side at home, they produced another display of defiance, holding Brentford to a goalless first half despite the visitors' superior possession.
Paul Dawson, the club captain and driving force in midfield, epitomized the fight, while Luis Lacey and the backline repelled wave after wave of attacks. Early chances for Romelle Donovan and a long-range effort from Dawson kept the tie alive, but fatigue and Brentford's quality told in the end. Manager John Rooney, brother of Manchester United legend Wayne, was proud despite the defeat. "The lads have given everything for this club and this town," he reflected. "From where we've come from, to go toe-to-toe with Brentford – it's been magical."
What this means for West Ham
Brentford's reward is a trip to West Ham United at the London Stadium in the fifth round. The Hammers, who advanced past Burton Albion earlier in the weekend, will provide a stern test for bot teams as West Ham will be battling to survive relegation and Brentford look to make run at European qualification.
West Ham will be coming off a March 4th match against London rivals Fulham, only to face another London rival 3 days later. Brentford will have an extra day of rest after their Premier League match up against Bournemouth.
