West Ham United have so far managed to keep hold of their main striker, Taty Castellanos. However, the Hammers are now being linked with Jamie Vardy.
Sky Sports has reported that "West Ham are keeping an eye on Jamie Vardy’s situation as they look to sign a striker before the end of the transfer window."
Vardy is a free agent after his contract with Cremonese came to an end. He did not have a bad record with them in Serie A, where he scored seven goals with three assists in 29 games. The striker is now 39, so he is not the player he was when he was in his prime at Leicester City. However, he could still be a good option in the Championship, particularly off the bench.
His story is remarkable as he went from playing non-league with Stocksbridge Park Steels, Halifax Town, and Fleetwood Town to winning the Premier League with Leicester. The Foxes were a Championship side when they picked up Vardy. He scored 38 goals with 16 assists in 98 games for the club. Vardy won the Championship with them twice in the 2013/14 and 2023/24 campaigns.
Jamie Vardy's career deserves to finish on a positive
His career with Leicester ended with relegation from the Premier League. He also suffered relegation with Cremonese. Vardy needs to end his career on a high, and this could be by helping West Ham to promotion from the Championship. He has also been linked with Wrexham this summer, but stands a better chance of winning English football's second tier with the Hammers.
At West Ham, Vardy will likely be an option off the bench for Castellanos. The Hammers also have Pablo, but he has recently been used as a left-winger or second striker. Niclas Fullkrug is also still at the club, but is expected to depart before the end of the transfer window.
If Vardy were to join West Ham, then he would also not have to worry about facing his former club, Leicester. The Foxes are now in League One after suffering back-to-back relegations.
The Hammers could do with signing a new striker after Callum Wilson joined Brentford. The Hammers also let Callum Marshall join Luton Town. Therefore, a player with Vardy's experience could be a great option for Nuno Espirito Santo.
