Transfer rumours have been quiet since the end of the summer transfer window. However, West Ham United are now being linked with Marcel Regula of the Polish side Zagłębie Lubin.
The Polish outlet, Sportoway, has reported that Borussia Dortmund, Eintracht Frankfurt, Benfica, and West Ham are interested in the player. They revealed (translated from Polish), "Contacts at club level have also taken place with representatives of West Ham United.
"The Londoners have not yet submitted a formal offer, but they are including the 19-year-old on their list of potential reinforcements. Ahead of the winter transfer window, the topic remains active through those involved in market talks."
As West Ham are a Championship club, it would appear that they would have a difficult task recruiting Regula when up against these notable European sides.
Regula is only 19, but has just been included in Poland's squad for the first time for the upcoming Nations League fixtures. He has already played for their Under-21s seven times and scored two goals.
What would the best move for Marcel Regula be?
The attacking midfielder, who can also play up front and on the right wing has been in form in the Ekstraklasa. In the top flight of Polish football, Regula has started all nine games for Zagłębie Lubin this season and scored twice.
Regula will have ambitions of playing at the highest level. Therefore, joining West Ham in the Championship, with a chance of promotion to the Premier League, could be a smart move. However, the Hammers are up against Dortmund, who have a track record of developing world-class young players recently.
Dortmund may also be able to give Regula immediate game time if he arrives in January. They currently have attacking midfielders Giannis Konstantelias and Justin Lerma out with injuries, which means they were not included in Niko Kovac's Champions League squad. However, they do still have Ethan Nwaneri on loan from Arsenal and Konstantinos Karetsas. Dortmund also reportedly chose to sign Nwaneri ahead of Regula on deadline day, despite Regula booking a flight to Germany.
West Ham could do with another attacking midfielder, as they only have Divine Mukasa in that position. However, others such as Mohamadou Kante have performed in the role.
Frankfurt will be looking for a long-term replacement for Mario Götze. However, they already have the highly rated Can Uzun as a quality attacking midfielder. Benfica could be a good stepping stone for Regula to one day play in one of European football's top five leagues. However, game time with the Portuguese side could be limited as they have Claudio Echeverri on loan from Manchester City and Georgiy Sudakov as attacking midfielders.
