The last time West Ham United signed a player from Borussia Dortmund, it did not go to plan. Niclas Fullkrug scored just three goals in 29 games for the Hammers before being sent on loan to AC Milan. He will likely be returning to the London Stadium at the end of the season, as Milan is unlikely to make his move permanent.
Fullkrug could be reunited with one of his former Dortmund teammates at West Ham. Ekrem Konur posted on X: "Arsenal are interested in Julian Brandt. Borussia Dortmund → decision only after season ends. Fenerbahçe, AS Roma, Aston Villa & West Ham → also monitoring the player."
Brandt's contract with Dortmund expires at the end of the season. He has played 300 times for Dortmund since joining from Bayer Leverkusen. The German midfielder is 29 now, so it could be time for him to try out a new division.
Should Julian Brandt join West Ham United?
After being at one of the biggest clubs in Germany, it may feel like a bit of a downgrade for Brandt to be heading to a team currently fighting relegation in the Premier League. He would also only join West Ham if they keep their top-flight status.
Brandt would get game time at West Ham, which he could find hard to come by if he were to join Arsenal or Villa. The Gunners have Martin Odegaard as their attacking midfielder, whilst Villa have Morgan Rogers.
The Premier League is a big draw for many players as it is the best division in the world. Therefore, even a transfer to West Ham would appear more preferable than Roma or Fenerbahce. The Hammers could do with a big-name signing if they stay in the Premier League to show ambition of climbing up the division.
