West Ham United were outclassed by Aston Villa today. This was a shame, as a victory would have meant that the Hammers would have climbed out of the bottom three at Tottenham Hotspur's expense. Nuno Espirito Santo's side now has the international break to lick their wounds before taking on Leeds United in the FA Cup on April 5.

Aston Villa–West Ham Premier League player ratings

Below, we're rating the West Ham players on a scale of 1 to 10.

Goalkeeper and defenders

Mads Hermansen (GK): 5

Mads Hermansen made a great save to deny Lucas Digne from range, but was then beaten by John McGinn from another effort from outside the box. The goalkeeper did not command his penalty box, especially when defending corners. Hermansen denied Ollie Watkins and Ross Barkley. However, he was then beaten by Watkins after he parried Morgan Rogers' effort.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka (RB): 5

He played wing-back against Manchester City and looked to still be doing so against Villa, despite the Hammers reverting to a back four. Aaron Wan-Bissaka was often out of position.

Dinos Mavropanos (CB): 7

Dinos Mavropanos was willing to put his body on the line for his team. The Greek international posed some important challenges, clearances, and interceptions. West Ham would have conceded many more had it not been for Mavropanos.

Axel Disasi (CB): 5

Axel Disasi struggled against Jadon Sancho. He could not emulate his center-back partner's form.

El Hadj Malik Diouf (LB): 5

The Senegalese looked composed on the ball despite his country recently being stripped of its Africa Cup of Nations title. However, he did let Sancho get around the back of him too often.

Midfielders

Freddie Potts (CDM): 4

West Ham's midfield was completely overrun in the first half, and Freddie Potts struggled and was hauled off at the break. Adama Traore replaced him.

Tomas Soucek (CM): 5

An unusually quiet performance from Tomas Soucek, who lacked the pace when up against a Villa counterattack.

Mateus Fernandes (CM): 5

Mateus Fernandes has recently been called up by Portugal. However, he did not put in his best West Ham performance against Villa. He got stuck in but often lost the ball too easily.

Forwards

Jarrod Bowen (RW): 6

The West Ham captain produced some strong runs on the right flank, but was often unable to find the right cross, or lost possession.

Taty Castellanos (CF): 4

The Argentine looked isolated up front, but was surprisingly taken off for Callum Wilson at halftime.

Pablo (LW): 5

Started wide, but moved centrally after the break. However, Pablo still could not get into the game.

Substitutes

  • Callum Wilson, 5/10
  • Adama Traore, 5/10
