West Ham United have not had a settled goalkeeper this season. Mads Hermansen started the campaign, but after just four Premier League games, Alphonse Areola retook his position. However, Hermansen has now started the last five games in the league. This has led to Areola now being the cup keeper.
Goalkeeping transfers are often complicated as they depend on the movement of players in the key position. It appears that West Ham have already identified a potential target, but there are many different factors at bay as to whether he will arrive at the London Stadium.
The transfer expert, Ekrem Konur, posted on X: "West Ham exploring move for Nottingham Forest GK Matz Sels! Belgian → keen to stay in top European league. Deal depends on West Ham survival + Forest relegation. (Lukasz) Fabianski & Areola likely to leave → Sels could compete with Hermansen."
Is it likely that Matz Sels will arrive at West Ham?
Sels is currently the starting goalkeeper for Forest, who are just above West Ham in the Premier League table. They are 17th, which is out of the relegation zone, with the Hammers in 18th place, but only on goal difference.
Fabianski has made just one EFL Trophy appearance for West Ham this season. He has missed much of the campaign with a back injury. His contract with the Hammers expires in June, and it appears that the 40-year-old's career is coming to an end.
Areola is still contracted to West Ham until 2027, but he will not be happy with continuing to play cup games. Therefore, he will likely seek pastures new. This will allow space for Sels to join West Ham. However, a lot will depend on the run-in to the end of the season, and if the Hammers or Forest survive in their relegation battle.
