James Trafford had an impressive record in the Championship last season, where he conceded just 16 goals. This led to the then Burnley player being re-signed by Manchester City. Trafford had come through the ranks at City before joining the Clarets.
Trafford began this season as City's first choice, but he did make a mistake as his side lost 2-0 to Tottenham Hotspur. The goalkeeper was soon replaced by the newly signed keeper from Paris Saint-Germain, Gianluigi Donnarumma.
Donnarumma has been an ever-present for Pep Guardiola's side, which has led to Trafford regretting his move back to the Etihad Stadium. He is now being linked with transfers away from City.
Could West Ham United sign James Trafford?
According to SportsBoom, "West Ham United will rival Aston Villa for James Trafford’s signature if the goalkeeper decides to leave Manchester City this summer."
The Hammers have changed their goalie multiple times throughout the season. Many were surprised that Alphonse Areola lost his place to Mads Hermansen at the start of the campaign. Hermansen had recently been signed from Leicester City, who had just been relegated from the Premier League.
Hermansen had a poor start to the season, and Areola was reinstated after four league games. However, Hermansen has recently regained his place and impressed in the win over Burnley and the draw with Manchester United.
Trafford would undoubtedly become West Ham's number one if he joined the club. However, Villa, who he is also being linked with, are third in the division, and would therefore be a more attractive option for the keeper.
Villa does have Emiliano Martinez, whose exploits for Argentina have made him regarded as one of the best keepers in the world. However, he has been linked with moves away from Villa Park recently. After sitting on the bench for much of this season, Trafford would be wise to choose his next destination wisely, to ensure that he plays games.
