West Ham United midfielder Tomas Soucek has opted to put any potential contract extension on ice until the Premier League campaign concludes, as the Hammers continue their desperate fight to avoid relegation. According to a club source, the player asked his reps to table any extension talks so he could focus entirely on the task at hand: surviving relegation.
The 31-year-old Czech international, whose current deal runs until the summer of 2027, had been approached by the club about extending his stay at the London Stadium earlier than anticipated. Sources indicate West Ham were keen to secure his future amid his consistent performances this season. However, Soucek’s representatives have insisted on waiting until the final whistle of the 2025/26 season before making any decision, citing the uncertainty created by the club’s precarious league position and the player's focus on the task at hand.
West Ham currently sit in the relegation zone, battling to climb out of the bottom three with just a handful of games remaining. The club’s survival is far from guaranteed, and the player’s camp believes it would be premature to commit long-term without knowing whether the Hammers will be playing Premier League football next term.
“Tomas has been a model professional and a vital part of the squad for years,” said a source close to the negotiations. “The club wanted to get something done during the season to show their commitment, but given everything that’s at stake this season, his reps want to assess the situation properly once we know which division West Ham will be in. No one wants to make the wrong call in the heat of a relegation scrap.”
Soucek has been one of West Ham’s standout performers throughout the difficult campaign. Deployed primarily as a defensive midfielder, the tireless Czech has started the majority of recent matches, delivering crucial tackles, aerial dominance and leadership in the engine room. His experience — more than 250 appearances and dozens of goals since arriving from Slavia Prague in 2020 — has made him a fan favourite and a trusted figure under manager Nuno Espírito Santo.
Despite the off-field uncertainty, Soucek has remained fully focused on the pitch, helping the team grind out vital points in their survival bid. Earlier this season he spoke warmly about his love for the club, describing the London Stadium as “home.” Yet the harsh reality of a relegation fight has prompted a more measured approach from those advising him.
If West Ham secure their Premier League status, Soucek is widely expected to be open to signing a new deal that would see him remain at the club into his mid-30s. Should the worst happen and the Hammers drop into the Championship, however, the midfielder — one of the club’s higher earners — could find himself among the senior players moved on as part of a necessary squad rebuild and wage reduction.
West Ham fans will be hoping one of their most dependable players can continue to drive the team forward in the final weeks of the season. For Soucek himself, the coming months will decide not only the club’s fate but also the next chapter of a career that has seen him become one of the most respected and consistent performers in the Premier League.
Contract resolution can wait. Survival cannot.
