Solly March left Brighton & Hove Albion last summer, after 13 years with the club. He helped the Seagulls win promotion from the Championship as runners-up in the division during the 2016/17 season. Therefore, his experience could be valuable for West Ham United this campaign.
A recent article on Football League World suggested that the Hammers "should" try to sign March. However, there was no information about West Ham actually having interest in the player. They also suggested that West Bromwich Albion ought to secure his services too.
He has been linked with Southampton and Crystal Palace over the summer, but nothing has come to fruition. March is now 32 and injury-prone. In the last three seasons, March played a combined total of 19 Premier League appearances.
March's last full season for Brighton was in the 2022/23 campaign, where he made 33 appearances in the Premier League, scoring seven goals and nine assists. He was linked with West Ham back in 2020, but that was when March was in his prime. He is now past his best.
Solly March is too old and injury-prone
The right-winger could do a job in the Championship if he stays fit. He would be a backup option for Jarrod Bowen, so this could be a role that suits him at this stage in his career. West Ham do not have another out-and-out player in Bowen's position.
Despite lacking right-wingers, West Ham does have players who can fill in the role. Manor Solomon, Edvin Austbo, and Maxwell Cornet are all natural left-wingers, but can play on the right too. Even striker Pablo also has experience on the right wing.
West Ham have a history of signing ageing, injury-prone players who fail to make their mark. They have had the likes of Samir Nasri, Álvaro Arbeloa and Mladen Petrić. All of these players had limited minutes with the Hammers.
Nuno Espírito Santo's side already signed Joel Veltman, who was a free agent after leaving Brighton last summer. Being a right-back, Veltman could link up well with March, as they should still have good chemistry.
Veltman has done okay so far, featuring in seven Championship games. However, he is now 34 and had to come off injured after just 30 minutes in the win over Wrexham. He then missed the draw with Millwall. West Ham needs experience to get them out of the Championship. However, what they do not need is someone who is just going to spend most of the time on the treatment table.
