Maxwel Cornet joins Premier League side Southampton

West Ham have been active in this summer transfer window, completing nine new signings to assemble a quality squad. Thus, now they are trying to offload several players who haven't performed well at West Ham and it's highly likely that they will get very less playing time at the London Stadium this season. Thus, the Hammers are trying to negotiate with several clubs to agree a permanent transfer or send the player out on a loan transfer on the final day of the summer transfer window. 

One of them is Maxwel Cornet, who joined West Ham two years ago following his impressive displays for Burnley in his debut season in the Premier League. The left winger, scored nine goals and provided one assist for Burnley and thus was expected to reinforce West Ham’s left wing with his blistering pace and goal scoring form. However, manager David Moyes already had Said Benrahma and Pablo Fornals, who performed well in the 2022/23 season, which reduced Cornet's playing time in his first season at the London Stadium.

Next season, he struggled with fitness and couldn't replicate his Burnley form at the Hammers in his limited appearances, mostly as a second half substitute. Now, transfer expert, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the 27-year-old forward is joining Southampton on a season long loan move saying,

"Maxwel Cornet to Southampton, almost completed."

This transfer move will provide a fresh start for Cornet to showcase his potential at Southampton after two years of struggles at West Ham. He has already proven himself at Burnley who were aiming to avoid relegation in that 2021/22 season and Southampton are also in a similar situation. The Saints have achieved the promotion to the Premier League and want to avoid relegation this season, therefore they have brought in Cornet, who has a lot of Premier League experience and will want to perform well at his new club. 

West Ham already have Cryscencio Summerville and Mohammed Kudus for the left wing role and overall, have a star studded squad that are aiming for a top six finish this season in the Premier League.
