The summer transfer window in Europe's top five leagues have closed and West Ham have made a total of nine new signings so far. However, the Hammers may look to consider making a few signings on a free transfers as well. On the final day of the summer transfer window, West Ham agreed season long loan deals for Kurt Zouma and Nayef Aguerd, who have joined Al-Orobah and Real Sociedad for this season.

This leaves West Ham with three centre back options in the first team, Max Kilman, Jean-Clair Todibo and Konstantinos Mavropanos in the squad. Recently, manager Julen Lopetegui discussed the club's transfer plans to have two quality players for each position and at centre back, West Ham still need one more decent squad option in case starting central defenders, Max Kilman and Jean-Clair Todibo get injured during the season. In the first three games of the new Premier League season, West Ham have shown some improvement from last season, however, they could have taken a draw against Aston Villa and Manchester City, if not for a few defending mistakes.

After the 3-1 defeat against Manchester City, manager Julen Lopetegui highlighted this fact, saying,

"When I analyse the goal, that two for sure are actions that we could do better. The window is closed and you can now only sign free players right now."

Alongside improving the defence in the upcoming games, manager Julen Lopetegui revealed that West Ham are considering making a few free transfer signings as well. The market has closed in the top five leagues in Europe, however, all Premier League teams can still add some free transfer signings to their squad until 14th September. Thus, West Ham can still bring in an another central defender to provide more squad depth to their defence.

With the international break coming up, it remains to be seen whether West Ham decide to make any further additions to their first team squad.
