Defensive duo becoming West Ham's best signings of the season

At the start of this summer transfer window, West Ham's biggest priority was to improve their defence. Last season, the Hammers conceded a huge 74 goals in the Premier League, with most of them coming in the second half of the season, where West Ham struggled to build upon a good start in the season and finished the 2023/24 league season at the ninth place. Kurt Zouma, Nayef Aguerd and Vladimir Coufal struggled with pace and therefore, conceded a lot of goals when facing quality forwards.

Therefore, when Julen Lopetegui became the new West Ham manager, the focus was to assemble a decent defence which will help the Hammers in their ambition to achieve a top six finish in the league to return to playing European football at the London Stadium. Thus, West Ham completed the signings of Max Kilman, Jean-Clair Todibo and Aaron Wan-Bissaka to bolster their defensive ranks. Todibo has arrived from the French league, so, he needs time to adapt to the pace and physicality of the Premier League.

But, on the other hand, Kilman and Wan-Bissaka are well familiar with the English top flight and they are showing their huge Premier League experience at West Ham. In the three matches, Max Kilman has showed why West Ham signed him for £40 million from Wolves, apart from being a great defender, the 27-year-old helps in organizing the defence and is extremely brilliant with the ball at his feet. He showed that against Crystal Palace as he made his run from his own half and then gave a perfect key pass to Jarrod Bowen, who finished well to make the score 2-0.

Also, while defending, Kilman has made several huge blocks and well timed tackles to help West Ham keep a clean sheet in the last two matches. Recently, Micah Richards heaped praise on the centre back who was also awarded the Man of the Match in the 2-0 win over Crystal Palace. Talking about Wan-Bissaka, it is a surprise that the Hammers signed him for just £15 million from Manchester United. Wan-Bissaka is an elite defensive right back and can also perform quality tackles, like he did in the narrow 1-0 win over Bournemouth in the second round of the Carabao Cup.

Further, the 26-year-old made a huge contribution on the opening goal against Crystal Palace with a great run down the right flank. Hence, Max Kilman and Aaron Wan-Bissaka have been the best signings from this transfer window. Hopefully, the other six new players also play a key role for the club this season.
