Andy Irving expresses his thoughts on his West Ham debut
Although West Ham's first half performance against Chelsea in the 3-0 defeat wasn't convincing, the Hammers made some improvement in the second half. Already behind 2-0 at halftime, manager Julen Lopetegui made a few changes to try and find a few goals to make a comeback in the match. However that wasn't the case and Chelsea added a third goal, minutes after the start of the second half and defended well to take a 3-0 win.
Among the substitutes, Andy Irving made his Hammers debut and played the final twenty minutes of the match. Overall, it was a decent display from the 24-year-old midfielder who was rumoured to leave the London Stadium in this transfer window after the arrivals of Guido Rodriguez and Carlos Soler. However, manager Julen Lopetegui made the decision to keep the creative playmaker at the club, who made a few good key passes in the final third and took an attempt on goal as well against Chelsea.
Andy Irving expresses his thoughts on his West Ham debut
After the match, Irving expressed his delight at making his West Ham debut and expressed his thoughts, saying,
"Since I signed for the Club the biggest thing for me was playing in the Premier League for West Ham, so I’m really happy that I’ve been able to do that and that my hard work has paid off."
- Andy Irving
Despite being happy to make his debut, Irving highlighted the 3-0 defeat and revealed that the Hammers will aim to return to winning ways when they face Liverpool in the Carabao Cup fixture in the third round. Also, Guido Rodriguez and Tomas Soucek haven't been impressive in the previous two games and struggled to advance the ball forward due to Fulham and Chelsea's high-pressing tactics. Therefore, Irving could get another second half substitute appearance in the next few matches and if he performs well, then he could be in the starting lineup as well.
