West Ham United and Swansea City are quite similar clubs in many aspects. Since the turn of the century, both sides have won notable trophies. The Hammers won the Europa Conference League in 2023, and the Swans lifted the EFL Cup in 2013.

Both West Ham and Swansea were established Premier League clubs but have now dropped down to the Championship. They are now both challenging to return to the top flight. It is no surprise that players have represented both clubs in their history.

Big names who played for both West Ham and Swansea

Frank Lampard

West Ham fans will, of course, remember Lampard coming through their academy and spending the early part of his career with the club before going to Chelsea. However, many will not know that he had a loan spell at Swansea in the 1995/96 campaign.

It was only a short loan spell with Swansea from October to January. The midfielder played nine times for the Welsh side and scored his first senior goal against Brighton & Hove Albion. The Swans were in the Second Division at the time, so it was a good experience of first-team football for Lampard.

Lampard would make his debut for West Ham the following season against Coventry City. Now, he is the manager of the Sky Blues in the Premier League.

Lukasz Fabianski

Fabianski was with Arsenal, but was never their first choice before he joined Swansea in 2014. He was Swansea's number one for four years and was their player of the season for the 2017/18 campaign. That season, the Swans were relegated, and he then joined West Ham.

The Pole would win Hammer of the Year in his first season with West Ham. He also won the Europa Conference League with the Hammers. However, he did not feature, as Alphonse Areola was the club's keeper for European games at the time.

Areola would eventually replace Fabianski as West Ham's goalkeeper for Premier League games too. He left the Hammers in the summer of 2025, but returned in September of that year after Wes Foderingham departed. However, a back injury ruled him out of action, and he retired at the end of last season.

Andre Ayew

Ayew had two stints at Swansea, sandwiching a spell with the Hammers. He had scored for the Swans against West Ham in the penultimate game at Upton Park. However, the striker would then join the Hammers for the following season at the London Stadium.

A popular chant by West Ham fans at the time included a line that 'he hated Welsh, and now he is a Cockney.' However, a dislike of Wales could not have been the case, as he returned to Swansea after just two years as a Hammer.

His time with the Swans appeared to be over after their relegation from the Premier League in 2018. He then went on loan to Fenerbahce, but returned to the Welsh side for two campaigns in the Championship. However, both ended with defeats to Brentford in the playoffs.
