Nayef Aguerd and Carlos Soler did not play together at West Ham United. The season that Soler was on loan at the club from Paris Saint-Germain, Aguerd was loaned to Real Sociedad.
Soler made 31 appearances in the Premier League for West Ham, where he scored once and made one assist. His goal came in a 3-2 win over Fulham at the London Stadium. The natural central midfielder was chosen to play on the wing by Graham Potter for that game.
The Spain international was signed under Lopetegui. However, he never really established himself at West Ham under Lopetegui or Potter. His loan from PSG was not made permanent, and he went on to return to Spain with Sociedad.
Aguerd's time at West Ham was more successful. He joined from Rennes in 2022 and was an integral part of the side that won the Europa Conference League the following year. In total, he played 61 times for the Hammers, scoring four goals and providing one assist.
After struggling with injuries at the back end of the 2023/24 campaign, Aguerd was loaned to Sociedad. He made 21 appearances in La Liga for them, but again struggled with injuries late on in the campaign.
West Ham will likely regret letting Aguerd leave
The Moroccan international began last season with West Ham. However, he played in heavy defeats against Sunderland and Chelsea before joining Marseille permanently. Last season in Ligue 1 was also disrupted by injuries, and he made just 16 league appearances.
Despite his injuries, Aguerd is a quality defender, and West Ham may regret letting him go. This is especially true as Dinos Mavropanos did not have a solid centre-back partner until Axel Disasi arrived on loan from Chelsea last season. The Hammers still went on to be relegated at the end of the campaign.
He was close to joining Sociedad for another loan over the summer. Despite passing his medical, Aguerd decided against joining. Sociedad needed him to play immediately, when Aguerd needed to be gradually integrated into the side.
The defender has still been playing for Marseille this campaign, featuring in all seven of their Ligue 1 games so far. They face Sturm Graz in the Europa League tonight. Marseille needs a win after losing their opening two games of the competition to Besiktas and Olympiacos.
The team Aguerd could have joined, Sociedad, faces Lillestrom in the Europa League this evening. Soler is yet to play in the competition this campaign, but has played in all of their La Liga matches.
If West Ham fans are wondering which game to watch tonight, then checking in on how Aguerd or Soler are getting on could be an option. Ex-West Ham left-back Emerson is also at Marseille. Alternatively, another former Hammer, Thilo Kehrer, could be in action for Ajax against Atalanta tonight too.
