With relegation looming, West Ham United's chances of keeping Mateus Fernandes are getting slim. He has been linked with Manchester United, but The Telegraph has reported that they are also interested in Morgan Rogers, Adam Wharton, Elliot Anderson, Aurélien Tchouaméni, and Sandro Tonali.
With West Ham losing to Brentford and Tottenham Hotspur beating Aston Villa, the Hammers are back in the bottom three. With just three Premier League matchdays to go, it looks very likely that West Ham will be playing in the Championship next season.
Even if by a miracle West Ham stay up, it will still be difficult for them to keep Fernandes. The midfielder has been one of the few Hammers players to perform this season. His form has led to him now being a Portugal international after he made his debut for Roberto Martinez's side during the recent international break.
After being relegated with Southampton last season and fighting another battle to stay in the division this campaign, Fernandes would want to be at a club at the other end of the Premier League table.
Is Manchester United the right club for Mateus Fernandes?
United is targeting a range of midfielders with different qualities. Rogers is more of an attacking player, Fernandes, Tonali, and Anderson are central midfielders, whilst Wharton and Tchouaméni are deep-lying midfielders.
United needs a replacement for Casemiro in the defensive midfield role as he is leaving the club at the end of the season. Manuel Ugarte could also be sold in the summer. They will still have Kobbie Mainoo, who recently signed a new contract to keep him at Old Trafford until 2031.
Mainoo is back playing regularly under Michael Carrick. However, there is still uncertainty in the United dugout, as it has not been confirmed if Carrick will be their manager beyond the end of the season.
Transfers for Tonali and Anderson are ambitious. Anderson has also been heavily linked with Manchester City. Fernandes' versatility to play several midfield roles could make him a good fit for United. He is predominantly a central midfielder, but can also play in defensive and attacking roles. He can also play on the left and right.
