Soungoutou Magassa was not in West Ham United's squad as they defeated Portsmouth 3-1 in the EFL Cup last weekend. He is now being linked with Ligue 1 clubs Olympique de Marseille and Olympique Lyonnais.
The Foot Mercato Journalist Santi Auona posted on X (translated from French), "Magassa could leave West Ham by the end of the transfer window. Several clubs have made inquiries in recent weeks, including OM and OL. No concrete offers at this stage."
Magassa played for AS Monaco before he joined West Ham. He has also represented France at the Under-21 level. Therefore, a return to his homeland would be tempting for the now 22-year-old. This is especially after the Hammers were relegated from the Premier League last season.
The midfielder played 57 times for Monaco, which included seven appearances in the Champions League. If he were to join Lyon, he could again play in Europe's premier football competition. Lyon will face Fenerbahce across two legs in the playoffs to qualify for the Champions League. This is a better option than playing for West Ham in the Championship.
Soungoutou Magassa is still a highly rated young player
If Magassa were to join Marseille, then he would be on a team in the Europa League. OM could also do with signing a new defensive midfielder, with Pierre-Emile Højbjerg heavily linked with a move away from the club. Marseille already has two former West Ham players in their ranks, Nayef Aguerd and Emerson.
Earlier in the window, Magassa was linked with Juventus, Galatasaray, and Eintracht Frankfurt. As tempting as a move to Juve would be, their captain, Manuel Locatelli, holds their defensive midfield position.
Magassa should prioritise a move to one of Europe's top five leagues ahead of the Turkish Super Lig. A move to Frankfurt would have made sense, as they are managed by his former Monaco boss, Adi Hütter.
Last season was mixed for Magassa at West Ham, as he only made 22 Premier League appearances. The Hammers will want to cash in on him, as they still have an abundance of defensive midfield options. Edson Alvarez looks set to stay at the club despite links with a move away earlier in the window. The Hammers also have Mohamadou Kanté and Tomas Soucek to return from injury.
