Jack Collison came through the West Ham United academy and became a fan favourite. He was the club's Young Player of the Year for the 2008/09 season. The midfielder showed immense bravery as he played against Millwall just two days after the passing of his father.
Collision helped West Ham earn promotion back to the Premier League via the playoffs in 2012. The former Wales international was particularly impressive in the semi-finals, where he scored a brace in the first leg away at Cardiff City.
Unfortunately, with the Hammers back in the top flight, Collison struggled with injuries. He went on loan to AFC Bournemouth and Wigan Athletic. Then he joined Ipswich Town, but did not play before ending his career at Peterborough United.
He started his coaching career managing the Posh's Under-21s and U18s. Then he returned to West Ham as a youth coach before heading to the United States. Collison's first role across the Atlantic was with Atlanta United's academy.
He then took charge of Atlanta United 2 in the USL Championship, where he managed 60 games. Collison's next role was with Huntsville City, who are Nashville's reserve side. He had 32 matches in charge of Huntsville in MLS Next Pro before leaving the club by mutual consent. This followed a run of eight straight defeats.
Jack Collison is now working with the USYNT
Despite it not working out for him at Huntsville, Collison is still coaching in the country. He is now a coach for the U.S. Men’s Youth National Team.
Collison recently posted on X: "Another great experience with the USYNT. Competitive games against some top teams." This was in reference to fixtures for the USYNT U17s against Scotland, the Netherlands, Belgium, and France.
Football or soccer in the U.S. should be on a bounce right now after they hosted the World Cup over the summer. However, the USMNT had a controversial ending to the tournament, with Folarin Balogun's suspension being overturned after intervention from Donald Trump. They still crashed out of the tournament in the round of 16 to Belgium.
Lionel Messi, who recently retired from international football, is still playing in MLS for Inter Miami. He is contracted to the club until 2028 and continues to boost attendance at matches.
Collison has had great coaching opportunities in America, which he may not have had in England. His playing days were cut short through injury, and at 38 is a very young coach. Collison is going about his managerial career in the right way by gaining experience with youth teams. Maybe one day, we will see him back at West Ham in another coaching capacity.
