Reece Oxford starred for West Ham United on his Premier League debut in a 2-0 win over Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. Oxford was only 16 at the time, and it appeared the soccer world was at his feet.

Unfortunately, he was hauled off at half-time as the Hammers lost 2-1 at home to Leicester City in their next game. Appearances for West Ham were then sporadic, and he went on to play just 17 times for the club.

Oxford was sent on loan to Reading, but made just five appearances in the Championship for the Royals. He was clearly not going to get much of a chance in English soccer, so a move to Germany soon came to fruition. This was a smart idea, as many young English players, including Jadon Sancho, Jude Bellingham, and Jamie Gittens, got opportunities there with Borussia Dortmund.

Reece Oxford's career has not lived up to expectations

The former West Ham player had two loan spells at Borussia Monchengladbach and one with FC Augsburg. Augsburg went on to sign him permanently, and he went on to play 80 times for the Bundesliga side.

Unfortunately, he left Augsburg at the end of the 2024/25 season. During that campaign, Oxford played just three times in the Bundesliga as he recovered from knee surgery and had calf and muscular problems.

Oxford has been without a club since. He is only 27, so it is a shame that a once-promising career has hit a hiatus. There was a rumor that he could join Bristol City over the winter, but a move to the Championship side did not materialize.

It remains to be seen where Oxford's career goes from here. Due to his injury problems, clubs will be reluctant to take a chance on him. However, there is no doubt about his ability if he can keep fit.
