Aston Villa have just lost to Paris Saint-Germain in the Super Cup. However, the Europa League champions could strengthen their squad by signing Aaron Wan-Bissaka from West Ham United.
According to The Athletic, "Aston Villa have held exploratory talks with West Ham United over a move for Aaron Wan-Bissaka. The 28-year-old is among Villa’s list of targets for the right-back position, which has been identified as a key position to address this summer as the club seeks to provide competition for Matty Cash."
Cash played against PSG, but he had the difficult task of being up against Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. Villa's only other senior right-back is Kosta Nedeljkovic, but he is only 20 and has just returned from a loan at RB Leipzig. Ezri Konsa can play at right-back, but the Villa centre-back is being linked with Arsenal.
West Ham fans will be glad to see Aaron Wan-Bissaka go
Wan-Bissaka had a good first season at West Ham, where he won the Hammer of the Year award. However, in the last campaign, as the Hammers were relegated, he was poor. Kyle Walker-Peters often started ahead of him towards the end of the season.
Walker-Peters is set to be West Ham's first choice right-back for this season. He played 90 minutes against Portsmouth as the Hammers won 3-1 in the EFL Cup last weekend. Nuno Espírito Santo's side have also signed Joel Veltman after he left Brighton and Hove Albion. Veltman will be an experienced option for Nuno.
West Ham begin their Championship campaign this Sunday against Burnley. They need to rid themselves of players who do not want to play in the second tier of English football. Wan Bissaka has also been linked with Everton and Fenerbahce. He is only 28, so he should be in his prime. Playing for Villa, who have the Champions League to juggle with their Premier League commitments this campaign, would appear to be his best bet.
