Jarrod Bowen has recently been linked with Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. It will be very difficult for West Ham United to keep star players like him, especially if they are relegated to the Championship. Now, another key performer has been linked with a move away from the London Stadium.
According to the Manchester Evening News, West Ham's financial situation "could open the door for (Manchester) United's hierarchy to look at Mateus Fernandes." This comes after The Mirror reported that "West Ham United have admitted they will have to sell players this summer even if they avoid relegation from the Premier League. The Hammers have revealeda £104.2million loss for the last financial year."
Fernandes left Southampton last summer after they were relegated to English soccer's second division. He could jump from a sinking ship once again, which would be understandable as he is a quality player who is too good for the Championship.
Mateus Fernandes would be a huge loss to West Ham
Fernandes featured in the Championship in Southampton's opening three games of the season before being transferred to West Ham. He has since made 26 appearances for the Hammers, scoring three times and making three assists. Without him and players like Crysencio Summerville, West Ham would be in an even worse position in the Premier League.
As a Portuguese Under-21 international, who has tasted playing in the Champions League for Sporting CP, Fernandes will be very ambitious. Therefore, a move to the Red Devils would appeal to him. Many top Portuguese players have turned out for the Old Trafford side, including Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes. There is no doubt that West Ham's Fernandes would want to follow in their footsteps.
Fernandes has been linked with European giants in the past. Juventus were reportedly interested in him before he joined the Hammers last summer. It is an uncertain time for West Ham and many of the club's players.
