West Ham have one of the best youth academies in the Premier League and put a great focus towards developing promising talented players at the club. Several elite Premier League players such as Mark Noble, Rio Ferdinand, Frank Lampard and John Terry have came up through the youth ranks at the club before becoming world class players. Currently, West Ham have a lot of promising young talents in their squad such as new £25 million signing Luis Guilherme, Lewis Orford and Kaelan Casey who are expected to establish themselves as a regular starter for West Ham in the upcoming seasons.
Among those talents, they have also sent a few players on a season long loan move such as Freddie Potts to get more playing time this season. Potts spent the previous season on a loan move at third division side Wycombe Wanderers and started 32 league games for them registering four goal contributions as well. The defensive midfielder was a part of Julen Lopetegui's West Ham squad in the preseason and gave a good substitute cameo against Wolves in the Sunshine State Tour match.

His defensive work ethic and game awareness were rewarded with a move to Championship side Portsmouth, where he is currently thriving under manager John Mousinho. Athough Portsmouth are yet to take a first league win after nine matches, Potts has showcased his huge potential as a deep-lying playmaker in the recent 1-1 draw with Oxford United. Manager Mousinho was impressed with Potts's all-round display in the midfield and heaped praise on the 21-year-old, saying,
"I think Freddie has been excellent coming into the side. He’s very calm and composed on the ball, positionally very good, and also strong enough in the tackle his overall game has been very, very solid."

Mousinho highlighted Potts's brilliant positioning and physicality, which are very crucial in the Premier League. Moreover, West Ham will need to find a long-term replacement for Tomas Soucek in the midfield position and this could consider promoting Potts to the first team if he continues to improve his playmaking and pace as well. Hence, West Ham fans are delighted to see what the future holds for one of their promising holding midfielders in the upcoming seasons.
