GSH Transfer Player Profiles: Should West Ham sign Tetê?
West Ham United fans may remember the name, Tete. The Brazilian midfielder was playing for Lyon in the Europa League quarter-final first leg, where he provided the assist for Tanguy Ndombele’s equaliser.
The samba star is on loan at the club from Shakhtar Donetsk, but there is no indication that he will permanently remain in France.
GSH writer James has analysed Tete’s performances, his style of play under coaches in both Ukraine and France as well as what he can bring to the West Ham squad.
QUICK FACTS
Full Name: Mateus Cardoso Lemos Martins

Place of Birth: Alvorada, Brazil

BIOGRAPHY
Tete was born in Alvorada in 2000. He joined Grêmio’s academy in 2008 and quickly progressed as a player. He scored 33 goals for the reserve team in the year 2016, and he was rewarded with a new contract in 2018.
He signed for Shakhtar Donetsk in February 2019. He has scored 25 goals in 75 games for his team, which is a 3:1 goal-per-game ratio. He notably scored one goal and registered one assist in Shakhtar’s 3-2 win over Real Madrid in the Champions League last season.
After Russia begun their invasion of Ukraine in February, Tete and his Brazilian teammates posted a video to ask for assistance in leaving the country. He boarded a bus to Romania and stayed there temporarily. Lyon soon contacted his agent and agreed to sign him on loan until the end of June.
STYLE OF PLAY
Although he is an attacking midfielder, Tete has often played as a right-winger for Shakhtar. This has proven to be his best position, as he has been able to use his pace and acceleration to move past full-backs. His speed on the field makes him very difficult to track, and he cuts into the box to create chances for his teammates.
Tete’s trickery and technical ability show in games. He keeps the ball close to both of his feet in order to perform tricks, often with good success. He shows a strong psychological sense to keep opponents guessing.
WHAT HE CAN OFFER WEST HAM
West Ham are in the market for a right sided attacker with Andriy Yarmolenko set to leave the club with his contract expiring at the end of the season.
Jarrod Bowen will of course be the first choice in that position but Tete’s ability to play in more than one position makes him an interesting option.
