West Ham United’s search for a new left-back has taken a new turn over the last few days, with Ecuadorian international Pervis Estupiñan being linked with a move to the Premier League. The 23-year-old currently plays in La Liga for Villarreal.

Estupiñan was initially close to agreeing with Serie A side Napoli. Still, reports in Italy have suggested that talks between the player and Napoli have broken down and that Estupiñan wants to move to the Premier League. Moreover, Estupiñan’s agent has contacted West Ham regarding a potential transfer, and the club could consider moving for him.

The Premier League would not be new territory for Estupiñan. He signed for Watford from LDU Quito in 2016, but he failed to make a single Premier League appearance and was loaned out to several Spanish clubs. He signed for Villarreal in 2020, joining for £15,000,000 and agreeing on a seven-year contract. Estupiñan made 25 league appearances in his first season for Villarreal.

Estupiñan is often used in situations where the ball needs to be moved along the wing quickly, leading to counter-attacking football. He works well with five defenders in the formation because it gives him more choice as to where he can pass the ball. This system also helps Estupiñan to mark opposition players, as he can help clear a path for his teammates to pass the ball up the field.

He is defensively responsible as he is attacking-minded, and he always looks for opportunities to win possession. This is the main reason why he has become known for being a good interceptor of the ball. Estupiñan also stays in line with his center-backs to add further coverage and play centrally. He focuses his game on moving forward with the ball while ensuring that it does not pass his side of the field.

It would make sense for West Ham to sign a new left-back due to Aaron Cresswell’s age and Arthur Masuaku’s inconsistent performances. Pervis Estupiñan is accessible for a move abroad after his move to Napoli collapsed, and West Ham could very well be a good destination for the young defender.
