It was a question mark in the offseason, and it has come up numerous times so far during the first month of the season, but love it or hate it because West Ham has found their best backline.

It sounds cliché to say that all we have to do is trust in Pellegrini, but its seeming to be a pretty true idea. The Gaffer, only in year two has West Ham with 7 points and sitting in 7th to end out the first month of play and his decision to start Ogbonna over Balbuena the past 3 matches have turned out as well.

Most of the West Ham world, ourselves included, had written off Angelo Ogbonna from existence but the Italian has fought through the scrutiny and turned out solid back to back matches. The fact that the Hammers have gone from a negative 5 point differential to now a negative 1 speaks volumes for not only for the goalkeeper but the defense.

Once again on Saturday, the headline was whats wrong with Balbuena or what has he done to make Pellegrini mad? The truth might just be that Ogbonna is playing better than the Paraguayan and so the Gaffer has rewarded him.

More from Green Street Hammers - West Ham

In Oggy’s 3 EPL appearances this season he has played all 90 minutes of each match while averaging 3 key tackles, 1 interception, 6 key clearances, and has been beaten off the ball less than 1 time per match. It almost feels like we have the Ogbonna from the last season at Upton Park.

As for the other three that have featured most prominently in the backline, Diop is only 22 years of age and coming on strong, Fredericks is still getting his feet wet in the EPL but has looked well so far, and then there is Arthur Masuaku. Many predicted him to start over club veteran, Aaron Cresswell but very few predicted that he would do so well.

The Congolese international has been on fire so far this season and won the GSH Man of that Match last week against Norwich. According to whoscored.com, he has a rating of 7.91 which has only proven that he has kept his form from last season.

dark. Next. West Ham's first month of play has been spectacular

For now, it seems the Pellegrini has found his best backline, which for many fans will be refreshing. The best part is that the midfield and the defense have begun to connect well together only emphasizing that we must trust Pellegrini, the players, and what is happening in East London. Until next time, COME ON YOU IRONS!
