Powell has played over 60 U18 and U23 games for West Ham and has been at the club for over a decade, showing against that the Hammers can take talent from youth level all the way through. With 2 goals and 4 assists so far in the U23 season, it’s easy to see why Powell was selected to be part of the Cup side.
A versatile attacking player, he can play wide in midfield or in the centre. In pre-season he was even tasked with filling in at left back. His technical ability and desire to be involved lead to us suggesting him as part of an youthful attacking set up earlier this season. Now we have seen it come into fruiting.
I would have loved to have seen him start the game, but I know that it was important for Pellegrini to get the side through and get some first team players some confidence. With that achieved Powell fit in well in the midfield, and I’m sure he wished he could have had longer to try and get a goal himself. Like Coventry, his performances for the Hammers at U23 level suggest it will not be long until he makes himself hard to ignore for inclusion in the first team.
