Edson Álvarez has featured just once for West Ham United this season. He played 75 minutes in the 3-1 victory over Portsmouth in the first round of the EFL Cup back in August. Not much to talk about on the field, but plenty off of it.

Firstly, Álvarez was accused of knowing about an alleged kidnapping of the Mexican producer, Juan José López Ordóñez. Alvarez denied López Ordóñez's accusations. Now the filmmaker has claimed that Alvarez was involved in the production and sale of fake COVID-19 vaccination certificates.

López Ordóñez's motives for these claims are reportedly due to unpaid debt related to a documentary about Álvarez's career. This film was not finished.

Many athletes are sceptical about COVID-19 vaccines. The tennis player, Novak Djokovic, did not get the vaccine, and this led to him being deported from Australia ahead of the Australian Open. Sunderland midfielder Granit Xhaka admitted to using a fake COVID vaccination certificate. This led to him being given a fine of £136,000.

Álvarez is in a bit of a messy situation, as many West Ham fans were hoping that they would see him back in action soon. Due to his passionate performances, supporters would have wanted him on the field for their fixture against Millwall last month.

We could still see Edson Álvarez back in action soon

The Mexican recently posted an Instagram collage, which included photos of him in West Ham attire. This led to speculation that he could soon be back involved with the Hammers.

It was expected that Álvarez would be sold over the summer. He had spent the previous campaign on loan at Fenerbahce, but struggled with injuries. He was linked with the likes of Real Sociedad, FC Köln, Benfica, Eintracht Frankfurt, and Olympiacos.

Álvarez is still contracted to West Ham until 2028. Therefore, he could still be an asset to the Hammers for at least this campaign in the Championship. Maybe even the following season if West Ham are to get promoted back to the Premier League. However, there will likely be interest in the player from other clubs in January.

West Ham are doing well in the Championship this season and are currently second only to Swansea City. They are light on defensive midfield options. Tomas Soucek has only just returned from injury, and Mohamadou Kante is being used in a more advanced role. Soungoutou Magassa is in a similar boat to Álvarez. The Frenchman was also expected to leave in the last transfer window and is yet to be fully reintegrated into the squad.

Due to the recent controversies, Nuno Espírito Santo may be reluctant to play Alvarez if he feels that he is not in the right frame of mind. However, Álvarez is a strong personality and one of Mexico's captains. It remains to be seen if we will see much of him in a West Ham shirt going forward.
