Edson Álvarez has been pulled into a serious and bizarre controversy in Mexico after filmmaker Juan José López Ordóñez publicly accused the player's inner circle of being connected to his alleged kidnapping in November 2024. This story is developing and has a lot of moving parts. As of now, it remains one man's account, given in a magazine interview, with no criminal charges, no judicial finding, and no response yet from Álvarez himself.
The core allegation isn't that Álvarez personally orchestrated or carried out a kidnapping. López Ordóñez's account, given to TVNotas, alleges that the player and his wife, Sofía Toache, were aware of and complicit in an alleged express kidnapping that he says was ordered by his father-in-law, Jonathan Toache, as a way to make a financial dispute go away. That's the specific accusation: complicity and knowledge, not direct orchestration.
According to López Ordóñez, the conflict traces back roughly four years, to before the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. He says Álvarez commissioned him to film a Super 8-format documentary chronicling his career and rise through the sport, a project that ended up taking around two years to shoot. The agreed fee, per the producer, was 3.5 million pesos. The filmmaker claims that it was never paid. He claims most of his communication about the project and the payment ran through Toache rather than Álvarez directly.
Layered on top of that is a separate real estate dispute. López Ordóñez says he made Toache a co-owner, without any investment on Toache's part, of a property he owned in Mexico City's San Rafael neighborhood, valued at around 30 million pesos, and that Toache later arranged what López Ordóñez describes as a "simulated loan" at a notary's office tied to that property.
López Ordóñez's account of what happened next is graphic and specific. He says that on November 3, 2024, while driving in the Polanco area of Mexico City, two armed women pulled open his car doors, forced their way in, blindfolded him, and told him he was being taken to Chalco. He says he was held for roughly half a day, threatened, and at one point had a syringe placed against his neck. His claim is that this was arranged specifically to stop him from continuing to pursue the unpaid documentary fee and the property dispute and that after he survived and filed a police report, Toache paid money to have the investigation halted. He says he's continued receiving death threats since and has had to change addresses multiple times as a result.
Neither Édson Álvarez nor any legal representative has issued a public statement addressing the accusations at the time of writing. Mexican outlet Récord has reported that people close to the player have indicated that a statement is being prepared to address both the debt dispute and the kidnapping allegations directly, though nothing has been published yet.
It bears repeating clearly: these are accusations made in a media interview, not findings from any court or law enforcement process, and multiple outlets covering the story, including a story in La Silla Rota, have confirmed that none of these claims have been judicially substantiated, and there's no resolution determining any responsibility on Álvarez's part. Until Álvarez or his representatives respond, or any formal investigation produces findings, this remains an unverified allegation.
West Ham attempted to sell Álvarez over the summer transfer window, but did not receive any offers that met their valuation. He appeared in a Carabao Cup tie with Portsmouth last month, but has not been part of the squad since. It's not clear whether these looming allegations played a role in him requesting to sit out the fixtures that followed his lone appearance.
