West Ham United’s Academy of Football continues to deliver silverware, as the Under-17 side etched their name into the history books on Wednesday night. In a thrilling U17 Premier League Cup final at the Wham Stadium, the first-year scholars produced a stirring comeback to defeat Blackburn Rovers 3-2 and lift the trophy for the first time.
Joel Kerr, the Northern Ireland U17 international who only recently signed his first professional contract, scored a dramatic 89th-minute winner with a powerful header. The goal sparked wild celebrations among the young Hammers and their travelling support, sealing a memorable night for the Claret and Blue.
This victory capped an outstanding campaign for the young Hammers. They topped Group G with commanding victories over Norwich City, Tottenham Hotspur and Ipswich Town. In the quarter-finals they dismantled Leicester City 4-1 on the road, before edging past Crystal Palace 3-2 in the semi-final thanks to another late winner.
The squad — made up almost entirely of first-year scholars — demonstrated maturity, fight and attacking flair throughout the competition. Their ability to recover from setbacks, seen both in the final and earlier knockout rounds, speaks volumes about the character being instilled at the Academy.
West Ham’s academy has long been regarded as one of the best in the Premier League for developing technically gifted, mentally tough players who progress to the first team. This triumph adds to recent youth success (the U18s lifted the same trophy last season).
