In hindsight, West Ham United should have gotten rid of Nuno Espírito Santo after the club was relegated. The club needed a fresh start, and bringing in Scott Parker, who is a West Ham legend, would have given the fanbase a huge boost.
West Ham have now confirmed Nuno's departure, following back-to-back defeats at the London Stadium. Hammers legends Mark Noble and Steve Potts, along with Nuno's former assistant, Gerard Prenderville, are to take charge of the team for the match against Cardiff City tomorrow night.
Not many fans would have expected to see Noble in the West Ham dugout after he retired from playing and became the club's sporting director. His time as an interim coach will remind fans of when he took over from Glenn Roeder in 2003.
Brooking won two and drew one of his Premier League games in charge of the Hammers. However, this was not enough to prevent the club from being relegated. He then continued as caretaker manager in the First Division and only lost one of his 11 matches. Alan Pardew then succeeded him and eventually got the Hammers promoted back to the top flight.
Noble will be alongside Potts in the dugout, and he has notable coaching experience with West Ham's Under-21s and U18s. He also worked as Nuno's assistant.
Scott Parker will be aiming for his fourth promotion from the Championship
West Ham already has their next permanent manager lined up. David Ornstein posted on X: "West Ham United strike agreement with Scott Parker to succeed Nuno Espírito Santo. Hoped 46yo in place for Cardiff + Mark Noble could join backroom team."
Parker has achieved promotions to the Premier League as the manager of AFC Bournemouth, Fulham, and Burnley. West Ham will need him to emulate this. When he was with the Hammers as a player, he was a passionate captain who was known for giving inspirational team talks. Parker even won the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year award in the season that West Ham were relegated.
Parker had a great relationship with Noble when they were players together at West Ham. It was from Parker that Noble learnt to be the leader he became at the Hammers.
Many fans wanted Craig Bellamy to be the next West Ham manager. However, the Hammers would have had to buy him out of his Wales job. West Ham have not poached another manager from another team since prizing Pardew away from Reading back in 2003.
Bellamy has done a good job with Wales, is a former Hammer, and was Vincent Kompany's assistant when Burnley previously achieved promotion to the Premier League. However, he has not done this as a manager, which Parker has done on three occasions. Therefore, Parker is the right man for the job.
