According to Catalunya Radio journalist, Tot Costa, West Ham, Aston Villa and Ajax have been approached and offered the chance to sign former FC Barcelona defender, Sergi Roberto on a free transfer.

Hammers boss Julen Lopetegui has been very busy already this summer and welcomed the likes of young Brazilian winger, Luis Guilherme, 33-year-old keeper, Wes Foderingham and £40 million summer signing Max Kilman to the London Stadium as the squad goes through a fairly big summer overhaul.

Recently, trusted journalist, Florian Plettenberg reported that West Ham had verbally agreed a £16 million deal with Bayern Munich to sign Noussair Mazraoui. However, with an experienced player of the calibre of Roberto available as a free agent on the market, Julen Lopetehui's side should look to bring the Spaniard to West London as well.

The 32-year-old right-back would bring a wealth of experience to the London Stadium having played over 350 club matches for FC Barcelona winning seven La Liga titles and the UEFA Champions League twice. The La Masia graduate is a versatile defender who started his playing career as a defensive midfielder and transitioned to playing mostly as a right-back and a right midfielder.

Sergi is known for scoring important goals as well. The highlight of his career came when he stretched himself to chip the ball over Kevin Trapp and into the Paris Saint-Germain goal which saw Barcelona complete a historical comeback in the Champions League after being down 4-0 after the first leg.

Roberto would therefore no doubt bring a significant level of experience and quality to the team. However, at the age of 32 it could be argued that his best days are behind him and last season saw the defender play as Joao Cancelo's backup at the right-back position. It is opposite to West Ham's policy to sign new players after an ageing squad saw West Ham struggle at ninth place in the Premier League last season.

However, it is still an early speculation that West Ham may consider the idea to sign Sergi Roberto. According to the report, Aston Villa are also interested in the player. If Roberto wants to join a Premier League club, Villa can offer him Champions League football next season which can be enough to land the veteran defender.
