This summer transfer window has been one of the best for West Ham in recent seasons, who have managed to sign several star players in their squad while addressing a lot of their priorities. Despite that, West Ham were interested in more reinforcements with an all around midfielder and a young striker also on their transfer wishlist. Hence, the Hammers tried to sign Milan's new signings Tammy Abraham as well as former Monaco star Youssouf Fofana, who they wanted to sign last year as well before bringing in James Ward Prowse in a £30 million transfer from Southampton.

This summer, West Ham were also considering the idea of signing Fofana's international teammate Adrien Rabiot as well, who was available on a free transfer after leaving Juventus at the end of the last season. Recently, the former Paris Saint-Germain defensive midfielder joined French club Marseille on a free transfer and it has been revealed that Julen Lopetegui's side were interested in signing him for the holding midfield role as well. In July, the Hammers had set their sights on Rabiot and viewed him as their Soucek replacement, however, the France international was involved in transfer talks with other European teams and West Ham had to improve their defence and sign a star forward as a priority at that time.

Rabiot is a world class box-to-box midfielder who can also play as a pivot in a defensive tactical setup as well. On top of that, he has decent pace and his physicality and athleticism help him in dominating the midfield and winning the ball possession multiple times throughout the match. Moreover, in recent seasons Rabiot has improved his finishing ability as well which led him to be a regular starter in the France national team as well.

Therefore, he is a good all around midfielder for West Ham, but the Hammers brought in defensive midfielder Guido Rodriguez on a free transfer instead, who has been impressive in his first five West Ham appearances this season.
