Although the club already has Tomas Soucek as the defensive midfielder, he has struggled in the preseason. Hence, Guido Rodriguez has been signed to partner Edson Alvarez in midfield.

Making his West Ham debut in the final preseason game against Celta Vigo, Rodriguez was one of the brilliant players for West Ham, as he won the ball possession several times and helped in the build-up play from the midfield. Thus, his strong showing in the preseason indicates that he could be a key player to watch for the Hammers this season. 

While West Ham's attack is their strength, the Hammers look to improve defensively under manager Julen Lopetegui, as West Ham conceded 74 goals in the Premier League last season. Hence, Guido Rodriguez and Edson Alvarez will be key players in West Ham, having more ball possession. Rodriguez's recovery pace, intelligent movement, and brilliant passing make him a valuable asset to the team.
