Former Manchester United legend gives his opinion on West Ham's new signing
Recently, West Ham faced a massive 3-0 defeat at home against Chelsea which is their third consecutive home defeat in this Premier League season. One of the biggest talking points from the match is the fact that the Hammers conceded two early goals in the first half which gave the Blues a great momentum to take the three points from the game. A big reason is also due to manager Julen Lopetegui making a lot of changes, both in the starting lineup as well as the formation which didn't helped the Hammers to get more defensive stability.
Jean-Clair Todibo was expected to make his first Premier League start in this big match, however Lopetegui surprised everyone by starting Edson Alvarez in the centre-back position despite playing a three central-defender formation. Alongside that Wan-Bissaka also played in an wide fullback role instead of his preferred right-back position, which created several empty spaces behind the Hammers midfield and as a result Chelsea scored their first two goals inside twenty minutes.

After the match, former Manchester United legend Michael Owen has given his opinion about Lopetegui's decision to play Wan-Bissaka in a more advanced fullback role, saying,
"I think he’s probably the best right-back in terms of defensively in the Premier League.

But if you’re going to ask somebody to get up wide and high and come inside and play central, that’s not his game."
Without a doubt, Wan-Bissaka possesses incredible pace, however he isn't great in making good decisions going forward and therefore he should be played in his original defensive right-back position where he thrived at Manchester United. Moreover, Lopetegui should return to the two centre-back formation and now should give more playing time to Todibo in the starting lineup instead of Konstantinos Mavropanos and Edson Alvarez, who struggled to keep up with the blistering pace of Chelsea forwards Nicolas Jackson and Cole Palmer throughout the match.
