Similar to Antonio, Emerson hasn't had some good performances for West Ham this season and couldn't make a block on Kristoffer Ajer's pass inside the box on the opening goal against Brentford. Manager Julen Lopetegui substituted the 30-year-old versatile fullback at the beginning of the second half and played Aaron Wan-Bissaka on the left back position with Konstantinos Mavropanos coming on the right side of the defence.
There were some doubts regarding whether Emerson would start this home match but the Italy international put up a great defensive display throughout the match. Emerson made seven tackles and two clearances alongside a huge block inside the box in the first half.

Minutes before half-time, Emerson advanced forward and exchanged a few passes with Paqueta before making a good delivery into the box towards Antonio, whose effort came off the crossbar but star forward Mohammed Kudus headed the ball in the back of the net to give an important 2-1 lead to the Hammers at the end of the first half.
