Scott Parker was known for giving an inspirational team talk as a player. He is credited with turning around a West Ham United game when they were three goals down to draw 3-3 with West Bromwich Albion back in 2011. Know, Parker, on his first day as West Ham's head coach, managed to turn around a match against Cardiff City by the same scoreline.

West Ham Player Ratings

Mads Hermansen - 4: It was thought that Alphonse Areola might get to play, as he was Parker's goalkeeper at Fulham. There was not much Hermansen could have done about Jack Moylan's wonder strike. Then he was sent the wrong way for the penalty. Hermansen was then beaten at the near post from a corner for Cardiff's third.

Joel Veltman - 6: Solid on the ball and kept the game ticking.

Dinos Mavropanos - 6: It was a huge boost to have Mavropanos back, and his passing was excellent.

Max Kilman - 7: Played the ball forward with confidence and is miles better with Mavropanos as his partner. Kilman linked up well with Bowen and got on the end of his pass to equalise.

Morato - 4: Clumsily fouled Moylan to give away the penalty and was often out of position. Also let his man go, who scored from a corner. Taken off at the break.

Jarrod Bowen (C) - 9: Was able to win corners and put crosses into the box. Bowen also got into dangerous areas to get shots on goal. He played an excellent ball over the top for Divine Mukasa's goal. Bowen played another long ball in the build-up to Arne Engels' goal. Another diagonal pass set up Kilman's equaliser. Bowen then nearly set up a winner for Ezra Mayers.

Soungoutou Magassa - 5: Parker has admired Magassa since the player was at AS Monaco. However, Magassa did not repay the faith put in him with a sloppy passing display. Magassa did make some good challenges, but was taken off at the break.

Arne Engels - 7: Passed the ball about with ease. However, he could have closed down Moylan better. Engels got forward often and finished well to get West Ham's second. Hopefully will be the first of many in a Hammers shirt.

Manor Solomon- 6: Solomon did little to make a highlight reel and was replaced by Edvin Austbo in the second half.

Divine Mukasa - 7: Nice touches in and around the box, and played a more advanced role that suited him. Superbly lobbed Nathan Trott to get West Ham back into it. Mukasa was also able to drop back to link up play.

Taty Castellanos - 5: Is instinctive when it comes to getting efforts on goal. However, his strikes lack conviction, and he was replaced at half-time.

Off the Bench

Ezra Mayers - 6: Was solid, but squandered a late chance to get the winner.

Mohamadou Kante - 6: It was harsh for the now-Mali international to start the game on the bench. However, he spread the ball around well when he came on.

Joel Piroe - 7: Nice flick-on to set up Engels' goal.

Edvin Austbo - 6: Kept the ball well when he was introduced and was able to take on players.

Tomas Soucek - N/A: Came on in the 88th minute and still managed to get a header on goal.
